Burning candles in your home makes it cozy. Whether it’s a fall scent to warm up your homestead on a chilly day or a spring scent to brighten the days coming out of winter, a candle brings a homey feeling at all times of year.
Candles are not made equally. Soy wax candles have so many more benefits for your health and the environment than paraffin wax. Check out these top 4 reasons why we only burn soy candles on our homestead. We want to keep our cozy abode as clean and healthy as possible.
Soy wax is sustainable. It comes from soybeans, which supports your local farmer and helps keep agriculture alive in an era of over-development. Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum, which is not a renewable resource, toxic and contains carcinogens. Soy is non-toxic since soybeans are a vegetable.
- Easy to Clean Up
Soy wax is biodegradable and cleans up with soap and water. If you ever spill your candle, just use some hot water and soap, and the spill should wipe right up. If you spill paraffin, the oil in it will not biodegrade and is very hard to clean up. The melting point of soy wax is lower than paraffin, so your candle will burn slower. In order to get something hot enough to melt the paraffin, you’d likely damage your surface in the process, like a countertop or carpet. You could scrape it up, but this would likely cause damage also.
- Cleaner Burn
Soy candles are practically soot free. If you keep your wicks trimmed properly, you should have almost no black residue in your jar. To keep your wick trimmed, trim to a quarter inch with a wick trimmer or sharp scissors.
- Supports Local Artisans
Lastly, buying locally made soy wax candles supports your immediate economy. There are many candle makers out there working hard to support their families and supplying their local stores with sustainable, long lasting and non-toxic options. Our favorite soy candle maker is Sugar Plum Candles out of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. You can check them out at www.sugarplumcandlespa.com. Deb pours every candle by hand, does not use fragrance enhancers and sources all her supplies from local or small businesses in the USA. She offers soy wax melts and soy wax candles.
